Why Industry Consolidations Like the American Airlines and US Airways Merger are Not Just for Big Companies

US Airways’ $11 billion acquisition of bankrupt American Airlines is a textbook example of what companies must do when their industry economics become abysmal: buy out the competition.  But leading the way in consolidating suppliers in an industry is not the preserve of only big companies. Some midsized companies, too, can play this game. Those that can do it without setting off the antitrust alarm of regulators should be thinking this way, especially if too little market power is concentrated in too many hands.
