Transgender woman settles lawsuit with Boston over treatment during 2010 arrest
Brenda Wernikoff was thrown out of a homeless shelter in 2010 after she tried to use the bathroom. Police arrested her for disorderly conduct, contending that she became belligerent when she refused to leave. But Wernikoff, 60, said once they brought her in for booking, they humiliated her, calling her “Bruce” and forcing her to take off her top so she would show them her breasts. The city of Boston has agreed to pay a transgender woman $20,000 in exchange for dropping her suit against the officers who arrested her.
