Suspect pleads not guilty in Springfield officer's shooting

(AP) — The man charged with shooting and seriously wounding a Springfield police officer pleaded not guilty during his first court appearance. During a hearing Thursday, a Greene County judge ordered 32-year-old Joshua Hagood held without bond on charges of felony assault on an officer, armed criminal action, felon in possession of a firearm, and receiving stolen property.

Case against second Saudi man provisionally dismissed

(AP) — An assault and kidnapping case against two Saudi nationals in Springfield could end with no one found guilty. The Springfield News-Leader reports (http://sgfnow.co/1yQtJ0D ) the men, who were students at Missouri State University, originally had bond set at $1 million each, which Saudi Arabia paid.

Police chief: Springfield officer shot has brain injuries

(AP) — The Springfield police chief says an officer who was shot while on the job earlier this week has "career-ending injuries." The Springfield News-Leader reports (http://sgfnow.co/1z4XtHs ) that 32-year-old Joshua Lee Hagood was charged Wednesday with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with the shooting.

Tax revenue from Illinois video gambling more than doubles

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers (http://bit.ly/15JcgvG ) reports the state made nearly $165 million in 2014 from video gambling, up from roughly $75 million in 2013. The head of the Illinois Casino Gaming Association blamed the decline on the spread of video gambling machines.
