After long wait, ranchers find relief from USDA

WASHINGTON (AP) — After a devastating blizzard killed thousands of cattle in October, South Dakota lawmaker and rancher Gary Cammack wondered whether his state's ranching community could recover. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the program will help people who have suffered since the expiration of programs from the last farm bill in late 2011.

South Dakota native earns Medal of Valor

The Bismarck Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1hazVn3 ) that military contractor Dave Jensen received the Secretary of Defense Medal of Valor during a recent ceremony at the Pentagon. The Army says Jensen was serving as an operational adviser with the U.S. Army Asymmetric Warfare Group in September 2012 when a CH-47 helicopter he was aboard was hit by a rocket.

New salmon species being considered for Lake Oahe

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Wildlife officials are considering adding Atlantic salmon to Lake Oahe. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks biologist Bob Hanten tells the Capital Journal (http://bit.ly/1qCsg87 ) that Atlantic salmon have a number of advantages over the Chinook salmon currently in the lake.
