N. Indiana man gets 58 years in friend's killing

(AP) — A northwestern Indiana man has been sentenced to 58 years in prison for the shooting death of a friend he maintains he shot in self-defense. Defense attorney John Cantrell had argued for a sentence of 45 years, noting that the Hammond man was 17 years old at the time of the shooting.

Fairbanks prisoner accused of soliciting murder

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) — An imprisoned former chiropractor and gun dealer from Fairbanks has been accused of attempting to solicit the murder of federal officers while behind bars. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://goo.gl/VVMn92 ) reports Guy Christopher Mannino, 56, has been in prison since Oct. 2013 awaiting sentencing for federal weapons charges.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — An Orangeburg man has been sentenced to six years in prison for a 2013 car crash that killed a Claflin University student. Judge Diane Goodstein suspended Jennings' sentence to six years in prison and five years of probation.

Prison teacher, guard arrested in separate cases

(AP) — A teacher and a correctional officer at the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility in Walnut Grove face charges after alleged incidents at the prison. The prison suffered riots on Dec. 31 and July 10, leading plaintiffs in the court case to question private prison contractor Management & Training Corp.'s control of the situation.
