Long Island police: Child in car, dad arrested

SELDEN, N.Y. (AP) — Police on Long Island say a man has been arrested after firefighters removed his 4-year-old daughter from a locked vehicle. Juan Pablo Aguilar Varela of Mount Sinai was awaiting arraignment Thursday on a child endangerment charge.

Panel faults safety practices at NY's Metro-North

NEW YORK (AP) — A panel convened by New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority says Metro-North Railroad has sacrificed safety for on-time performance in recent years. 19 indicted in Long Island drug ring sweep

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota (SPOH'-tuh) says six of the suspects are charged with operating as a major drug trafficker. Spota says the defendants "hid behind" legitimate jobs, including a taxi driver, house painter, insurance agent, landscaper and a day trader.
