AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Margarita Sanchez walked into a San Antonio legal aid office homeless, penniless, unemployed and stabbed by a husband who had thrown her out of their house and frozen their bank accounts.
In Texas, more than 5.7 million people qualify for legal aid based on their income, but the state only has enough money to help about 100,000 people a year, according to the Texas Access to Justice Foundation, the group charged with financing legal aid groups.
