The celebration began in 1785 when a Revolutionary War veteran, the Rev. Henry Wight, led patriotic exercises in the town. Town lore says it began as a procession of people walking to see the patriotic exercises.

Shumlin to march in Bristol, Brandon parades

BRISTOL, Vt. (AP) — Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin is marching in two parades on the Fourth of July. The Democratic governor will participate in the Bristol Independence Day parade at 10:30 and in the Brandon parade at 1 p.m. Shumlin also march in the Montpelier parade on Friday evening.
