Symphony review: Trumpet heralds rewarding evening

In Mahler's "Blumine" - a short, achingly sweet orchestral serenade with a checkered history - Thomas, Inouye and the entire orchestra collaborated to create 10 minutes of pure, shimmering magic. "Blumine" began life as incidental music written by the young composer for a theatrical entertainment called "The Trumpeter of Säckingen," which is why the trumpet plays such a starring role.
